Taylor Swift is kicking off the European leg of her concert tour. The singer has often been scrutinized for her frequent travels by private jet, drawing heavy criticism from environmental activists over the years.

Taylor Swift may seem like just another contemporary pop star, but the American singer is a unique phenomenon in global pop culture. The phenomenal sales of her albums defy the constantly changing music consumption trends, and she sells out massive stadiums in the blink of an eye, regardless of the location.

Poland has caught the "Taylor-mania" fever. Her most dedicated fans line up at the venue from the early hours to get as close as possible to their idol, hoping for even a brief moment of eye contact.

Taylor Swift broke an infamous record

Earlier this year, the pop star changed her mode of transportation. She has been flying in a Dassault Falcon 7X business jet, worth nearly $54 million. The jet comfortably seats 14 passengers, is suited for long-haul flights, and offers luxurious conditions comparable to the most expensive hotel suites.

However, owning a private jet has its downsides. Private jets produce significantly higher carbon dioxide emissions compared to commercial flights. As a result, Taylor Swift in 2022 ranked at the top of the list of celebrities with the highest CO2 emissions. To illustrate the scale of this issue, the ranking authors noted that celebrities produced nearly 500 times more carbon dioxide than the average citizen.

In that year, the 34-year-old emitted a total of 8,293 tons of CO2, taking 170 flights and spending a total of almost 16 days in the air. It's worth noting that Swift was not on a world tour during this period. Her shortest recorded flight lasted just 36 minutes. Her spokeswoman, Tree Paine, defended her.

Taylor's jet is loaned out regularly to other individuals. To attribute most or all of these trips to her is blatantly incorrect, she said.

Taylor Swift decided to rethink

With her growing ecological awareness, the singer reduced the number of flights by nearly 40% the following year. However, this did not satisfy environmental activists, who continued to use Taylor Swift as an example of downplaying the irreversible changes leading to global warming. In response, she took another step by purchasing twice the required carbon credits to offset the carbon footprint from her travels.

Meanwhile, critics of the singer's environmental impact intensified their scrutiny. University of Florida student Jack Sweeney conducted a detailed analysis of her flights from the previous year and presented his findings on the X portal. He showed that in 2023, the distance covered by her jets equaled circling the globe 170 times. Despite a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared to the previous year, it still amounted to 83 times more than the average American's emissions.
