New Orleans is preparing for a series of Taylor Swift concerts, which are expected to draw a large number of the star's fans. Local authorities estimate the event will bring as many as 150,000 people to the city. Consequently, the governor of Louisiana has decided to relocate homeless people camping near the concert venues.
As reported by lailluminator.com, last Wednesday, Louisiana state police officers conducted an operation to clear a homeless camp on Calliope Street, despite strong opposition from City Hall. Officers noted that residents would be moved to "a centralized area that provides better access to services and ensures a safer environment."
State authorities argue that the relocation aims to ensure the safety of those attending the events. This decision by the governor has sparked anger among New Orleans officials and human rights activists.
According to city officials, these actions directly conflict with the city's ongoing efforts to provide stable, long-term housing for homeless community members before disbanding camps.
Human rights activists are incensed
While human rights activists criticize the decision as a waste of taxpayers' money, they are relieved that the camp is being relocated rather than dismantled.
A camp resident, Terrence Cobbins, spoke out in an interview with AP, expressing his surprise at the decision to relocate. He noted that no such measures had been taken before other concerts. "They ain't never did it before for other people. Why Taylor Swift?" Cobbins said.
