Heavy rains have been pouring over Tanzania since November. Meteorologists have predicted that the precipitation will persist in the upcoming weeks. In several regions of the country, these heavy rains have led to the ruin of numerous crops.
The floods in Eastern Africa are partly a consequence of the El Nino current, which has previously triggered many floods and landslides that hit East Africa back in 2023.
Indonesia: Casualties after volcano eruption
A perilous incident also occurred in western Indonesia, where the eruption of the Marapi volcano resulted in the death of at least eleven tourists.
"26 people were not evacuated. We found 14 people: 3 alive and 11 deceased," quoted Abdul Malik, the leader of the search and rescue agency in Padang, on Monday.
Two hours prior, authorities reported a continuous search for 26 mountaineers who did not manage to evacuate immediately after the volcano eruption. The rescue operation remains in progress.
