Taliban praises rebel victory after Assad's fall in Damascus
The Taliban expressed hope for a "transfer of power in accordance with the aspirations of the Syrian people." They congratulated the Syrian nation and the rebels after the fall of President Bashar al-Assad.
"We express hope that the remaining phases of the revolution will be managed in a way that secures a peaceful, unified, and stable system," stated Afghanistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement issued after the rebels captured Damascus and overthrew President Assad.
The fall of Assad. Rebels capture Syrian capital
Syrian rebels announced early Sunday morning the capture of the country's capital, Damascus, and the overthrow of Assad, who had ruled with an authoritarian grip for 24 years.
This marks the latest stage in the ongoing civil war since 2011. Assad was supported by Russia, Iran, and the Tehran-backed Lebanese Hezbollah. The Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad and his family members, who fled Damascus, are in Russia, where they have received political asylum, Reuters reported, based on Russian media citing Kremlin sources.
