Syrian president warns Trump's Gaza plan is a 'crime'
The President of Syria, Ahmed al-Szara, expressed strong opposition to U.S. President Donald Trump's plan to resettle residents of the Gaza Strip. Sharaa described this plan as "a serious crime that will ultimately fail."
Sharaa emphasized that "no power can drive people from their land."
In a conversation on the British podcast The Rest Is Politics, he noted that many countries have tried to do this, and they all failed. He also added that if Trump genuinely wanted to deport Palestinians, it would be neither "wise nor morally or politically right."
International reactions
Trump's plan, which involves the U.S. taking control of the Gaza Strip and resettling its residents in Egypt, Jordan, and other countries, has faced sharp criticism from Arab nations and many other countries. In Israel, the proposal was welcomed, but Palestinians see it as an attempt to prevent the establishment of an independent state.
Egyptian President Abdel Fatah el-Sisi also expressed opposition to Trump's plan. In a conversation with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, he emphasized that rebuilding the Gaza Strip must occur without the displacement of its residents. Sisi noted that the creation of an independent Palestine is the only hope for lasting peace in the region.
Trump's threats
Donald Trump threatened to cut off aid to Jordan and Egypt if they do not agree to his plan. The American president wants Palestinians to be permanently resettled in these countries.
The Gaza Strip, devastated after a 15-month war between Israel and Hamas, is currently in a truce, but its future is uncertain. Trump's proposal has sparked controversy and divisions on the international stage, which could affect the region's future.
