According to media reports, former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad suddenly fell ill on Sunday in his Moscow apartment.

At one point, he began to "cough violently and choke." According to informants, tests revealed that he had been poisoned. He was treated at home, and his current condition is stable.

Assad with asylum in Moscow

Bashar al-Assad and his family arrived in Moscow on December 9. "Russia, acting on humanitarian grounds, granted them asylum," was conveyed at that time in a propaganda statement by RIA Novosti, citing a source in the Kremlin.

Assad fled from Damascus after opposition forces stormed the city, conducting a swift offensive and capturing cities such as Homs and Aleppo within a week and a half.

Civil war in Syria

The conflict in Syria, which began in 2011, is one of the most complex and bloody wars of modern times. It started as part of the Arab Spring—peaceful protests against Bashar al-Assad's regime quickly turned into brutal government repression, leading to the outbreak of civil war.

The conflict divided the country into several factions: Assad's regime forces, supported by Russia and Iran; moderate opposition; armed Islamist groups like Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the Islamic State (ISIS); and Kurdish forces seeking autonomy in northern Syria.
