Syria celebrates as rebels topple Assad's regime
The news of the probable overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime in many cities in Syria has caused widespread joy. People are gathering in the streets to celebrate the end of the dictator's rule. Just a few hours earlier, when rebels began taking over more territories, these same streets were deserted, as Assad's forces offered no resistance.
Syrian rebels announced on Sunday, in a televised statement, the liberation of Damascus and the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad after a 24-year reign. They later reported that they are working on transferring power to a transitional body that will have full executive authority.
This announcement has sparked euphoria in many areas. People are celebrating in the center of Damascus, which the rebels have taken over, and Syrian refugees are celebrating outside their homeland as well.
Opponents of Assad reported the capture of Damascus without encountering resistance from government forces. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) stated that the government army is withdrawing from Damascus airport. Reuters and CNN have reported on the ongoing fighting in the city.
Overthrow in Syria: People are toppling monuments
Earlier, there were reports that Bashar al-Assad left the country's capital on a plane whose destination is unknown.
There have also been online recordings showing the moment the monument of Hafez al-Assad, the former president of Syria and father of Bashar al-Assad, was toppled.
