Swedish 'gold' tanks: Ukraine's ace in armored warfare
Swedish Stridsvagn 122 tanks, equipped with advanced Barracuda IR camouflage, are considered the best armored vehicles in the Ukrainian arsenal. Let's recall their capabilities and explain what makes them phenomenal.
The Swedish Stridsvagn 122 tanks, an upgraded version of the German Leopard 2A5, are regarded as the best machines of their kind in Ukraine. These vehicles, outfitted with Barracuda IR camouflage netting, significantly enhance the effectiveness of Ukrainian armored forces.
"Swedish gold" at the front
Stridsvagn 122, known as "Swedish gold," is undoubtedly one of the most modern tanks used by the defending army. The machine is based on the German Leopard 2A5 but offers more advanced fire control systems and a TCCS command system, which enhances its operational capabilities. With a reinforced hull and more durable fuel tanks, the Stridsvagn 122 is resistant to harsh combat conditions.
Defense analyst Jarosław Wolski once emphasized that these are "the best and most heavily armored tanks that Ukraine has." The Swedes have provided the defending army with 10 of these tanks, significantly boosting its defensive potential. The main armament of the Stridsvagn 122 is the L/44 120 mm smoothbore cannon, supported by two 7.62 mm machine guns and an 80 mm smoke grenade launcher. The tank is equipped with an advanced fire suppression system and monitoring systems, greatly increasing its survivability on the battlefield.
Capabilities of Ukraine's armored gem
These tanks were designed for the Swedish army, with production occurring both in Germany and under license in Sweden. The Stridsvagn 122 retains many features of the German original but incorporates modern technologies that enhance protection and accuracy. A 1,500 horsepower engine allows the Stridsvagn 122 to reach speeds of up to 43 mph, with a range of about 292 miles on roads and 93 miles cross-country.
The Barracuda IR camouflage used on these tanks reduces their thermal and radar signature, making them harder for the enemy to detect. According to the manufacturer, Saab, the camouflage can reduce detectability by up to 90%, increasing the crew's survival chances.
The presence of Stridsvagn 122 in Ukraine is an important step in strengthening its defensive capabilities. Modern technologies and advanced camouflage make these tanks a crucial element in the arsenal of the Ukrainian armed forces. Ukrainians are pleased with the Stridsvagn 122 tanks supplied by Sweden, which they consider among the best for combating the Russian army.
