Sweden bolsters NATO mission with 15,000 new M4A1 rifles
The Swedish Armed Forces are urgently purchasing 15,000 automatic rifles from the USA. These new rifles are intended to replace the outdated weapons from the 1980s and 1990s. They will equip soldiers deploying on the NATO mission to Latvia at the beginning of 2025.
The Swedish Armed Forces have decided to acquire 15,000 Colt M4A1 rifles from the USA in response to the obsolescence of the older models used so far. These new rifles will be allocated to soldiers participating in the NATO mission to Latvia, thereby reinforcing the alliance's eastern flank.
American rifles will replace the Swedish-produced AK 5 rifles. This procurement is linked to issues with a joint acquisition effort by Sweden and Finland, which aimed to secure weapons from the Finnish producer Sako. The tender decision faced challenges from the German company Heckler & Koch.
The introduction of American weaponry is expected to enhance the reliability and operational efficiency of the Swedish forces, particularly given the increased demands resulting from NATO membership.
"By 2030, the size of the army is expected to double. The same goes for the volume of weapons, which we will need in large quantities," emphasized Jonas Lotsne, head of the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FM), as quoted by SVT television.
M4A1 rifles
The M4A1 rifle, which uses 5.56x45 mm NATO ammunition, is often compared to its civilian counterpart, the AR-15. It is primarily distinguished by its 14.5-inch barrel, although 16-inch barrels are also popular. Like its predecessor, the M16, the M4A1 operates on a gas-operated system with direct impingement, offering both advantages and certain drawbacks.
The M4A1 weighs about 6 pounds without a magazine, benefitting from the use of polymer materials, a direct impingement system, and an aluminum receiver. The rifle can be outfitted with aluminum or polymer magazines, each with a capacity of 30 rounds.
The weapon's theoretical rate of fire ranges from 700 to 950 rounds per minute, and its effective range can reach up to a maximum of 437 yards.
