Since mid-April 2023, a conflict between the government forces and the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has been taking place in Sudan. The war erupted as a result of a dispute within the alliance that had ousted the Western-backed government and seized power two years earlier.

The main figures in the latest phase of the conflict are General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who assumed leadership of the country following the 2021 coup, and Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, formerly one of the more influential figures in the Sudanese army and, since 2023, the chief commander of the RSF.

War has plagued the region for years

Darfur has been ravaged in the past by decades-long ethnic cleansing. Leading these campaigns was Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, leader of the Arab Janjaweed and now commander of the RSF.
