Tourists arriving here for the first time feel as if they have entered a fairy-tale city. The distinctive walls, built in the 12th century, add character to this place and create a unique atmosphere.

Located northwest of Madrid, Ávila is the capital of the Spanish province of the same name, known primarily for its exceptionally well-preserved medieval city walls. Built in the 12th century, they create an iconic cityscape that evokes fairy-tale associations. The walls rise on sun-baked plains, adding charm to this atmospheric place.

Magical illuminations

The city, which has preserved its unique character for over a thousand years, is often described as magical. This is due to its charming cobblestone streets and numerous Romanesque and Gothic churches, but also because of the atmosphere created by the extraordinary night lighting of the walls.

A walk along the nearly 1.2-mile section of the walls is an unforgettable experience. Spectacular views of the cathedral, Plaza del Mercado Grande, and the picturesque surroundings of the city are worth experiencing.

The walls of Ávila are a massive structure 1.6 miles long with 87 towers and nine gates. Despite their ancient appearance, they are superbly preserved and are one of Spain's most intriguing tourist attractions.

Monuments of Saint Teresa

Perhaps one reason the city is considered so charming is its connection with St. Teresa, a Carmelite and mystic, whose monuments can be found almost at every turn. They remind visitors of the metaphysical dimension of this place.

One traveler on TripAdvisor noted: "The sandcastles and walled cities you build with your children on the beach? In Ávila, they are real." Another tourist who visited Ávila during a trip to Segovia wrote: "Las Murallas de Ávila is an unexpected gift for my wife and me. I didn't realize that such a well-preserved medieval city surrounded by walls existed in Spain."
