Stellantis falters in Italy: Worst car production since 1956

The past year was challenging for the automotive industry, and the Stellantis group clearly stands out among the biggest losers in Europe. The situation was particularly dire in Italy, where the industry experienced a significant downturn.

Factory stoppages, thousands of unsold cars, and disappointed employees summarize last year in the Italian automotive sector. The production of cars, a key pillar of the local economy, fell by 37% compared to 2023.

According to data published by the FIM-CISL trade unions, the Stellantis group produced only 475,090 cars in Italy. This is the worst performance in passenger car production since 1956.

The declines severely affected the renowned Mirafiori factory in Turin, which in 2024 produced 70% fewer cars than the previous year. The situation was even worse in Modena, where Maserati plants recorded a 79% drop. Both factories struggled with cyclical and compulsory stoppages due to a lack of demand.

The Italian industry is still holding on, thanks to commercial vehicles, although their production also fell by 17% compared to 2023. Italy can only dream of achieving the results of around one million units per year, as promised a year and a half ago by the Italian government and Stellantis authorities. In 2024, the company failed to reach even half of that goal. There is hope that the coming months will see some improvement.
