The transition from winter to spring offers a perfect chance to begin gardening activities. Although spring has been with us for a while, it's only now that we're starting to enjoy truly pleasant weather. May is ideal for hosting barbecues and embarking on gardening projects. However, it's crucial to ensure that the species of trees or shrubs we plan to plant won't attract dangerous insects.
Hornets are drawn to certain types of trees and plants. Before adding seedlings to our garden, it’s advisable to research which ones to avoid.
Plants that attract hornets
Lilacs, with their sweet nectar hidden within the stems, act like magnets to insects, especially hornets. These insects try to reach the nectar with their mandibles, often causing damage to the lilac bushes. Therefore, planting lilacs risk encountering hornets and potential harm to the bushes.
Fruit trees such as apples, pears, and others also allure hornets. These insects damage branches and fruit, like their interaction with lilacs. Thus, planting plums, pears, or cherries near balconies and windows is discouraged, as this could attract hornets and wasps into our homes during the summer.
What plants effectively repel insects?
Knowing which plants deter hornets is equally important. Thanks to their scents, garlic, wormwood, and lavender can be planted around terraces or garden benches to keep these insects at bay. Pelargoniums and pansies are also great for balconies or gardens, embellishing the space and offering insect protection.
How else to repel hornets?
Numerous smells and products can effectively ward off hornets and similar insects. These include clove oil or white vinegar, among others. It's also crucial to avoid leaving food or sweet drinks uncovered outdoors, as these can attract insects. Installing screens on doors and windows can further limit insects’ access to our homes.
