Spiders on the move: How to prevent fall infestations in your home
With the end of summer and the arrival of fall, spiders increasingly seek shelter in homes. Certain mistakes we often make encourage these arachnids to enter our living spaces.

Fall is when spiders constantly search for warm and cozy places to spend the winter. Unfortunately, our homes often become an ideal refuge for them. September marks the start of the spider breeding season as they look for suitable places to lay eggs and survive the colder part of the year.
Contrary to popular belief, spiders are not attracted to light. However, many insects they feed on are drawn to home lighting, which lures spiders near the property. Understanding the mechanisms that attract these creatures and taking appropriate steps to deter them effectively is essential.
While spiders themselves are not attracted to light sources, many of the insects they feed on are, which in turn draws them towards outdoor lighting. Reducing outdoor lighting, especially overnight, can help decrease the number of insects - and consequently spiders - around your home, explained pest control expert John Stewart from the technical team at Pelsis UK in an interview with The Sun.
How to protect yourself from a spider invasion?
Sealing potential entry points is one of the most effective ways to reduce the number of spiders in the house. Pay special attention to window frames and spaces under doors. Installing seals and weather stripping can significantly hinder spiders from getting inside.
Regular cleaning is another key to success. Vacuuming not only eliminates spiders but also their eggs, which drastically reduces their population. Pay special attention to the corners of rooms and spaces under furniture where spiders like to hide. Additionally, using cleaning agents with a lemon scent can effectively deter these creatures.
Natural ways to deter spiders
There are many natural ways to deter spiders that are both effective and environmentally friendly. One method is using lemon peel. Simply rub it on windowsills, baseboards, or shelves to create a scent barrier that spiders dislike.
Consider planting strong-smelling plants such as mint, lemongrass, or eucalyptus in the garden or on windowsills. These natural repellents will deter spiders and freshen the air inside the house. Additionally, limit outdoor lighting at night as it will decrease the number of insects attracted by the light and consequently limit the spider population around your home.
