Spanish coastline shrinking: Climate change accelerates sea encroachment

Rapid climate changes have numerous adverse effects, clearly visible on the Spanish coast. The Ministry of Ecological Transition has conveyed some troubling news regarding these changes.
According to estimates by the Spanish Ministry of Ecological Transition, reported by local media on Thursday, June 6, the sea has encroached as far as 49 yards inland on the Costa del Sol since 2016.
Spanish beaches are shrinking
Government experts indicate that the Mediterranean Sea's encroachment on Spain's southern coast is accelerating. From January to May 2024 alone, four intense storms passed through the Costa del Sol, contributing to the sea reclaiming areas that were once beaches.
According to the Spanish ministry, Malaga's municipality is the most significant area infringed upon by the sea.
Rafael Yus from the organization "Ecologists in Action" suggests that due to the rapidly intensifying phenomenon of sea encroachment, coastal municipalities on the Spanish coast should limit the issuing of permits for constructing new properties near the beaches. "Ultimately, many inhabited areas could soon become islands," Yus summarized.
Spanish resort: A favorite among tourists
Costa del Sol is undoubtedly one of the most popular parts of the Spanish coast among tourists. It attracts crowds from all over the world every year, and it's no wonder. It is a perfect vacation spot with 186 miles of beaches, excellent hotels, and campgrounds with great infrastructure.
One of the most luxurious cities in this region is Marbella. The area offers excellent conditions for beach activities and water sports. In recent years, more and more affluent Poles have chosen to buy properties in this part of Spain.
