Soybean oil's secret: A healthier choice for cooking and skin
Until recently, olive oil overshadowed other oils, gaining a reputation for being superior and healthier. However, this perception doesn't capture the whole story, especially when considering specific oils and their properties—such as which have a high smoke point suitable for heating and which are better used cold. Soy is one of the most widely cultivated plants globally. It plays a crucial role in world cuisine and is an important oil source. Soy produces fat rich in unsaturated fatty acids, which are essential for regulating cholesterol levels and removing intestinal deposits. This significantly reduces the risk of heart disease, arteriosclerosis, strokes, and hypertension.
Enriched with vitamin E, a potent antioxidant, soybean oil helps protect the body against the harmful effects of free radicals. This strengthens the immune system and helps combat symptoms of aging and cancer. Additionally, the vitamin K in soybean oil aids bone regeneration and might help prevent or slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease.
Despite its numerous benefits, oils—including soybean oil—are calorie-dense, containing between 826 and 884 calories per 3.4 ounces. Therefore, it is advised to consume them in moderation (up to two tablespoons a day). Frying with well-heated oil prevents excess fat absorption by the food; also, avoid reheating the oil.
Applications of soybean oil
Due to its health and nourishing properties, soybean oil is extensively used in cosmetic production. This includes products designed for mature skin, which helps counter oxidative stress and protect cells from damage. It's also favored in products for oily and acne-prone skin and for use in massages.
Soaps, creams, lotions, or lip balms containing soybean oil are effective in delaying the aging process across all skin types. Their quick absorbability without leaving greasy residues and ability to prevent moisture loss makes them an excellent choice for skin exposed to signs of aging or pollution.
