On Saturday, Yoon Suk Yeol, the suspended president of South Korea, was released from detention where he had been held for over 50 days. He left the detention center in the town of Uiwang, located south of the capital.

The Central District Court in Seoul approved the request from his defense attorneys, who argued that the warrant issued on January 19 by the prosecutors was invalid because it was found to be procedurally flawed. The prosecution does not plan to appeal this decision, clearing the way for Yoon's release.

- I would like to thank the Central District Court for their courage and determination in correcting the illegality, - said Yoon as he exited the detention center amid cheers from supporters and representatives of the ruling People Power Party.

Charges against the president

Yoon was detained on January 15 in connection with an investigation into his declaration of a state of emergency on December 3 of last year. The politician was indicted by prosecutors on January 26 on charges of "throwing the country and people into crisis."

Criminal proceedings in the Seoul court formally began on February 20. The next hearing is scheduled for March 24, at which Yoon will be answering the charges out of custody. According to the Constitution of the Republic of Korea, the president can be held criminally liable during their term only in cases of charges of treason or a coup.

Yoon was suspended from his presidential duties after the parliament adopted a motion for impeachment on December 14. The Constitutional Court is expected to decide in mid-March on whether to reinstate or impeach Yoon.
