South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol announced in a televised address on Tuesday the implementation of martial law across the country. He accuses the opposition of controlling the parliament, sympathizing with North Korea, and paralyzing the government through anti-state actions, according to the AP agency.
He stated that this decision is "critical for defending the country's constitutional order."
Martial law in South Korea: The president did not reveal the details
I announce martial law to protect the free Republic of Korea from the threat of North Korean communist forces, to eradicate the vile pro-North Korean anti-state forces that jeopardize the freedom and happiness of our people, and to protect the free constitutional order, said Yoon Suk Yeol during the address.
Reuters notes that Yoon Suk Yeol did not explain what steps will be taken in relation to the martial law declaration.
