There's a trend in reviving iconic productions. We've already seen the premiere of "Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice," a sequel to "Beetlejuice." A revamped edition of the legendary "Gladiator" can be seen in the cinemas. Continuing this trend, Prime Video is looking to refresh the "Tomb Raider" series with a new lead actress, and her name is buzzing across industry portals.
Who will play the new Lara Croft?
Sophie Turner, a 28-year-old Emmy-nominated actress known as Sansa Stark in "Game of Thrones," is currently negotiating to portray Lara Croft in Prime Video's new "Tomb Raider" series.
Deadline reports that Turner was among the actresses considered for this iconic archaeologist and adventurer role alongside Lucy Boynton. It appears that Turner is set to take the lead role in Amazon's production.
The series is being developed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, famed for "Fleabag," who submitted the first script a few months ago. Prime Video commissioned the series in May, following a three-year, $60 million contract with Waller-Bridge.
The upcoming production will explore the adventures of the world-renowned archaeologist Lara Croft, based on the popular "Tomb Raider" game series that launched in 1996. Amazon has struck a deal with Crystal Dynamics, the brand rights holder, allowing for the possibility of future film projects.
Crystal Dynamics and Amazon are also collaborating on a new game in the series, though details remain under wraps. Waller-Bridge has expressed her excitement about the project, stating, "If I could tell my teenage self this was happening, I think she’d explode. Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life, and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators."
Lara Croft has been previously portrayed in films by Angelina Jolie in 2001 and 2003 and by Alicia Vikander in 2018. Despite mixed results at the box office, the character remains iconic in pop culture. The first film grossed $275 million in theaters, while the second earned only $156 million. Vikander revitalized the series, with "Tomb Raider" earning over $270 million, similar to the first film's success.
