In September 2023, the internet was abuzz with news that Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas were getting a divorce. Rumors suggested that Joe was the one initiating the split. The couple shared a joint statement on their Instagram profiles stating, "After four wonderful years of marriage, we have mutually decided to end our marriage amicably. There is much speculation about the reason, but in reality, it is a mutual decision, and we sincerely hope that everyone will respect our wishes regarding privacy for us and our children."
The media was quick to fault Sophie for the breakup, pointing out her young age at marriage, her enjoyment of a lively social life, and a desire to have fun. Now, Turner is addressing these damaging narratives about her.
Sophie Turner opens up to "Vogue" about her divorce
The star of "Game of Thrones" gave her first extensive interview on her separation from Jonas, revealing that the incident led to some of the darkest days of her life. "Those were the worst days of my life, and at times I thought I wouldn't make it. I called my lawyer and said it was over, that I couldn't endure any longer. I've never been strong enough to stand up for myself. Yet, two weeks later, amidst the turmoil, I was reminded that I needed to keep going for my daughters. Alone, I might not have found the strength, but for them - absolutely," confided Turner, who is a mother to 4-year-old Willa and 1-year-old Delphine.
It's worth noting that the day news broke of Turner and Jonas's divorce, reports surfaced of Joe having noticed "suspicious behavior" from his wife on a home surveillance tape, accompanied by photos of Sophie enjoying time with friends. She reflects on how challenging it was to be away from her children for two weeks due to filming commitments, during which she was depicted as a neglectful mother. "It was painful because I agonize over every maternal decision I make. The guilt is immense," she expressed.
"I had to remind myself that the stories circulating about me were false. I'm a good mother, not a habitual party-goer. It's astounding how quickly people form opinions based on a single image. A photo can convey a lot, but it doesn't tell my story. Watching my life unfold like a story written, produced, and acted by others was startling. It’s still hard to grasp," Turner commented.
In her "Vogue" interview, Turner spoke highly of Joe Jonas, calling him a good father and stating she harbors no ill feelings towards him. The custody of their children has been a point of contention since Turner wishes to live in the United Kingdom, her home country, while Jonas is American. "Now, when I’m at home, that's when I feel most content because I'm learning about who I am and discovering my interests," says Sophie.
She also mentioned that she's exploring the dating scene, an experience she hadn't fully embraced before.
