One might ask, what's the problem with wearing socks to bed? They do, after all, keep our feet warm. Those with low blood circulation, often experiencing a quicker cooling of the limbs, vouch for sleeping in socks and claim it allows for a more comfortable night's sleep and fewer awakenings.

Contrary to popular belief, however, doctors maintain a significantly different viewpoint. Experts advise that wearing certain types of socks to bed might indeed negatively impact our health. So, which ones are appropriate?

A few things to consider

Interia cites experts who emphasize the importance of the sock quality one selects for sleeping. Tight models, for instance, are not recommended as they may interrupt blood circulation adversely.

Furthermore, you're advised against wearing compression socks (unless prescribed by a doctor) or those made from synthetic, "non-breathable" materials. Models that do not allow sufficient airflow could interfere with the body's thermoregulation during sleep, leading to symptoms such as excessively sweaty feet and overheating.

Potential downsides of sleeping in socks

Sleeping in low-quality socks, especially ones made from polyester or similar synthetic materials may even prompt fungal infections of the feet and nails. Symptoms include pain, swelling around the nail, discoloration, a thickened and brittle nail plate, and an unpleasant odor. This condition necessitates prolonged treatment, could recur, and might be challenging to eradicate.

It's essential to remember that while sleeping in socks can have positive aspects, there can also be negatives. Therefore, you should only go to bed wearing socks that are the right size and made from breathable materials.
