The Lithuanian Ministry of Defense has confirmed the delivery of another support package to Ukraine. The package includes, among other things, two launchers of the NASAMS anti-aircraft system for the Armed Forces defending against Russian invaders. This latest delivery is part of a larger, vocal campaign by Kyiv to obtain one of the most advanced weapons complexes of its kind.

As a percentage of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Lithuania is one of the countries providing the most support to Ukraine. Lithuania does not hesitate to transfer even its latest and most expensive weapons. The delivery of two NASAMS launchers (Norwegian Advanced Surface to Air Missile System) consolidates a pledge made weeks prior. Moreover, it significantly augments Ukraine's defense potential, reinforcing its existing arsenal with system components supplied by Norway and the United States.

Deploying NASAMS Systems in Ukraine

"The NASAMS missile launchers procured by Lithuania will be integrated with the existing fire control units of the Ukrainian army. These inclusions not only enhance operational capabilities but also expand the reach of the NASAMS systems supplied by Norway and the United States. Our support remains instrumental to Ukraine's defense architecture. As we respond to Ukraine's needs, we urge other allies to do the same," said the Lithuanian Defense Minister, Arvydas Anušauskas.

In addition to the launchers, Lithuania has also transferred requisite vehicles for NASAMS crew operations and ancillary gear for the fire control centers.

NASAMS, known for being one of the most effective medium-range air defense systems available, has earned its reputation through verifiable performance. Testaments to its significant capabilities abound, the most notable being its use in protecting the American White House. The system has also proven its effectiveness in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where it operates at a high efficiency.

The complete NASAMS set comprises essential components such as the radar, the so-called "eyes of the system", the electro-optical sensor, the launcher, and the fire control center. The launcher, capable of housing up to six missiles, operates with a full 360-degree rotation. The latest version, in possession of Lithuania, is compatible with AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles, including an ER variant with extended range, AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II, and IRIS-T.

The effective operational range for these launchers is approximately 31 miles, with a maximum altitude reach of about 22 miles. However, enemy-detecting radars have a range of nearly 75 miles.

A notable distinction for NASAMS, when compared to its competitors, is the adaptability of its architecture. This flexibility makes the addition of new components, such as missiles or radars, a relatively straightforward process. Already, more than 20 distinct radar systems have been integrated with NASAMS.
