Slender Man attack: Morgan Geyser set for supervised release
Morgan Geyser, who in 2014 attempted to kill a friend to impress an Internet character, will be released from a psychiatric hospital. Judge Michael Bohren decided after assessing psychologists' evaluations.
The character who inspired Geyser has led to the creation of movies and video games. It was this character that 12-year-old Morgan Geyser wanted to impress.
At the age of 12, Geyser attacked her friend Peyton Leutner with a knife to achieve this goal. After 11 years, she is now being released from a psychiatric hospital.
Judge Michael Bohren decided to release Geyser from Wisconsin after consulting the opinions of three psychologists who verified Geyser’s progress.
Judge Bohren made this decision after reviewing these expert opinions. Dr. Brooke Lundbohm noted that Geyser has stopped taking antidepressants and does not show symptoms that pose a threat to society.
Lundbohm also emphasized that Geyser regrets her past actions. After her release, she will be supervised in a dedicated group home for 60 days.
In 2014, Geyser and Anissa Weier lured Leutner into the woods, where Geyser stabbed her 19 times. This attack aimed to impress the fictional character Slender Man. Leutner survived thanks to a passerby who found her.
The crime sparked an international discussion about the influence of fictional characters on the mental health of children. Both girls were sentenced to stay in psychiatric hospitals, and this has prompted the global community to consider important regulations for protecting young people from the dangers of the internet.
