This herring salad, complete with beets, potatoes, and egg, is a delicious recipe that your entire family will love. You can layer it to create not only a scrumptious dish but also a visually appealing one. In this salad, the essential elements are herring, boiled beets, potatoes, onions, and hard-boiled eggs. Mayonnaise is instrumental in binding all the ingredients together harmoniously.

The simplicity of a Christmas Eve salad

Naturally, every home has its unique customs and particular dishes. However, one thing common to all is the exceptional taste of these dishes on this day. A simple layered herring salad makes for an excellent accompaniment to the traditional fare.

Ingredients:

  • 8.8 oz of herring fillets,
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice,
  • 1 small onion,
  • 2 tablespoons of mustard,
  • 4 tablespoons of oil,
  • pepper,
  • 1.1 pounds of beets,
  • 4 potatoes,
  • 4 pickles,
  • around 10-13.5 fl oz of mayonnaise,
  • 5 hard-boiled eggs,
  • 5.3 oz of cheddar cheese,
  • a bunch of chives.

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the herring in cold water and soak for 20-30 minutes to get rid of any excess salt.
  2. Cut the fillets into smaller pieces and drizzle with lemon juice.
  3. Place them in a bowl and add finely chopped onion, mustard and pepper. Mix thoroughly.
  4. Move the herring to a large glass salad dish. Coat with a layer of mayonnaise.
  5. Boil the beets and potatoes until they're soft, then drain and cool.
  6. Peel the potatoes and cut into cubes, season with salt and pepper. Lay them on top of the herring.
  7. Add finely chopped pickles to the dish and spread another layer of mayo.
  8. Peel the beets, grate them and add to the salad, followed by another layer of mayonnaise.
  9. Chop up the hard-boiled eggs and mix them into the salad.
  10. Add grated cheese and chopped chives on top.
  11. Refrigerate for at least an hour.

For better results, it's advisable to prepare the salad the day before and allow it to refrigerate overnight so the flavors can blend. Bon appétit!
