DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures announced in an official press release on July 9th that work on the movie "Shrek 5" is in progress. The film is slated to premiere on July 1, 2026, which perfectly coincides with the 25th anniversary of the release of the first movie in the series.

Although the plot details of the fifth installment are still shrouded in mystery, one thing is sure – the original trio of main characters is returning to the screen. Mike Myers will again play the role of the green ogre Shrek, Eddie Murphy will voice Donkey, and Cameron Diaz will return as Princess Fiona. This beloved trio has become the unmistakable symbol of the series.

"Shrek" captured the hearts of fans

In the first film from 2001, "Shrek," the title character embarks on an adventure with his unconventional companion, the talking Donkey, to rescue the imprisoned Princess Fiona from a tower guarded by a terrifying dragon. However, the plot quickly deepens as it is revealed that Fiona has a secret – she turns into an ogre after sunset. This revelation changes everything significantly when Shrek and Fiona fall in love with each other.

Shrek's story continued in subsequent films. "Shrek 2" from 2004 introduced new challenges for the couple, pitting them against Fiona's parents. "Shrek the Third" (2007) showcased Shrek as the heir to the throne of Far Far Away. "Shrek Forever After" (2010) portrayed Shrek altering his fate to discover what life would have been like if he had never been born.
