A beautifully maintained lawn is one of the most stunning features of any garden. It not only adds charm to the space, but also provides an excellent place for relaxation and outdoor fun.
It is said that the best time to sow grass is in the spring, ideally from the start of the vegetation period until the end of May. However, does this mean that you can't sow grass in the remaining months?
Should you sow grass in October?
October is usually quite cold. Some believe that sowing grass in such conditions can be risky, as the seeds may lack the warmth and light necessary for germination.
It's not entirely like that. Gardeners assure that we can easily sow the seeds also in September, and even up to mid-October.
At this time, the soil is well heated after the previous summer months, and the increasing humidity in the fall creates ideal conditions for grass growth, which germinates. It should be remembered that the minimum temperature needed for grass growth ranges from 42 to 46 degrees Fahrenheit. Even somewhat cooler evenings and nights will not be an obstacle to this process.
Sowing grass at the beginning of October ensures that the grass roots will have time to establish before the onset of winter, which brings frost and snow.
Are you sowing grass? Remember this
In order to ensure uniform grass germination, it is necessary to maintain constant soil irrigation. Gardeners recommend manually watering the lawn regularly for the first 3-4 weeks after sowing. The stream of water should be gentle, and the amount of irrigation moderate. It is best to perform these tasks in the morning or late afternoon.
If we want our lawn to be lush, healthy, and intensely green, we need to remember about regular trimming. The first mowing should take place a few weeks after sowing, when the blades reach a height of about 10 centimeters. It is worth cutting them down to a level of 3 centimeters so as not to disturb the balance between the above ground part and the root system.
