Shooting at Brussels metro: Manhunt for armed suspects
Two men fired shots from an automatic weapon near the Clemenceau metro station in Brussels on Wednesday morning. The suspects are likely hiding in the metro tunnels, and videos showing the armed individuals have appeared on social media.
The exchange of fire was reported to have occurred on Wednesday. A manhunt is underway for the suspects who, according to the police, may be hiding in the metro tunnels. No one was injured, but the incident caused disruptions in public transportation. Surveillance footage broadcast by local media shows at least two men in balaclavas and armed.
Photos and videos of the armed individuals have surfaced on social media. "Attackers with Kalashnikovs are running around Brussels right now," wrote Paweł Rybicki on platform X.
According to Belgian media, the shooting may have been the result of local drug gang rivalries. The area around Brussels-Midi has long been notorious for crime.
A manhunt is underway
The police are searching for "a small group of people, probably two or three individuals." A police spokeswoman added that the suspects may still be armed, and the police do not want to take unnecessary risks.
The event is not currently being treated as a terrorist attack.
