Shock and awe: Ukrainian special forces strike deep into Russian territory, rattling Belgorod residents
Residents of the Belgorod region, which is adjacent to Ukraine and in close proximity to Kharkiv and Sum, once again endured fears for their safety at home. The Ukrainian army, specifically its special intelligence unit (HUR), staged a daring raid into enemy territory. However, they targeted not civilians, but strictly military entities.

The Ukrainians proudly shared footage of their audacious act. They divulged that the Russians presented few obstacles, concluding the raid successful. Meanwhile, the Russian Federation authorities have neither confirmed nor denied that their territory was assaulted. However, the recorded footage suggests otherwise.
This is not the first of its kind for the Ukrainian army, nor will it likely be the last.
Why did the Ukrainian special forces venture into Russian territory, and what were their objectives? These details are currently unknown, and it might be some time before the actual purpose of the mission is revealed. HUR implies in its statement that the objective of assault was "to inflict damage on the enemy and intensify his moral and psychological turmoil".
During the confrontation, the Russians allegedly incurred losses. As per HUR, "while carrying out the reconnaissance task, they laid mines on the invaders' single operational road in the targeted locality and additionally assaulted a Russian resistance stronghold." The aftermath of this confrontation is unclear; currently, only the supporting video material from the Ukrainian side is available.
It is certain this is not the first special operation in this region.
In the middle of May, a conspicuous attack on Belgorod prompted city-wide panic and spurred a significant psychological ripple effect across Russia. An infiltration group from the Russian Freedom Legion and the Russian Volunteer Corps crossed from Ukraine into the Belgorod region. It clashed with the local army, which was ineffectual in its defense.
Unofficial sources suggest that the operation aimed to achieve more than a psychological effect. Reportedly, the Ukrainian special forces were after the R-330Z Zhytel electronic warfare system that was operational in the area and safeguarding Belgorod. The Ukrainians allegedly seized "Zhytel" to collaborate with American and Western specialists to understand this piece of modern Russian equipment.
