She opened the gates to hell. The most terrifying movie of the year?
The international press has been increasingly featuring positive reviews of the horror movie "It Lives Inside", which stands the chance to become the best, most terrifying horror film of 2023.
"It Lives Inside" seems to be a very interesting film. Its producers are the people responsible for the success of the excellent horror movie "Get Out!". The 2017 production was undoubtedly an exceptional horror film. It not only enjoyed immense popularity in cinemas (over $250 million in revenues with a budget of just under $5 million), but also won an Oscar for best original screenplay. It also became one of the few horror films to be nominated for an Academy Award in the main category.
His artistic success with "Get Out!" was due to the use of elements of horror to present viewers with a social satire on contemporary America. What's the point, he proclaimed, if overt contempt and hatred towards African Americans is universally unacceptable, when hard ideological racism has been replaced by manipulation hidden under the guise of political correctness.
In the latest film by the producers of "Get Out!", horror is once again combined with social satire. The protagonist of "It Lives Inside" is a young Indian girl who abandons her Indian culture and family in order to fit in with her peers in school. However, when a demon from Indian mythology haunts her former best friend, the girl will have to reconcile with her heritage in order to defeat the terrifying monster.
For many viewers, horror is a genre of "low" art. It's hard to argue with this, since so many clichéd horror films are released annually, replicating the plot of predecessor movies, with all the creative energy poured into executing macabre scenes. However, sometimes at the border of horror, thriller and beautiful visuals, something emerges that could be called art and meaningful cinema. According to most critics (with many positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes), this is exactly what "It Lives Inside" is. The movie premiered in US cinemas last weekend.
