Shark route
The ocean research group OCEARCH reported that Penny, a great white shark measuring 10 feet 3 inches, was detected off Fort Myers Beach around 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 17.
Initially, Penny's presence was recorded off Boynton Beach, Florida, in December 2023. She then traveled southwest towards the Florida Keys, eventually moving into the Gulf of Mexico.
According to Fox News, this female shark, weighing 522 pounds, ventured into Florida near the Keys on February 4. Later, she moved north to the waters near Sanibel Island, where her most recent signal was received on March 17.
Great White Shark called Penny
She received the name "Penny" in honor of the inhabitants of Salty Penny Canvas in North Carolina, who have assisted OCEARCH by contributing to bespoke marine canvas projects. These projects enhance comfort at sea and enable operations under more challenging conditions.
Capt. Chip Michalove, who runs Outcast Sport Fishing in South Carolina, shared with Fox News Digital that it's common for many great white sharks to depart from the Gulf of Mexico and southeastern U.S. waters, migrating northward as far as Nova Scotia around this time of the year.
