Shark attack: 40‑year-old woman critically injured in rare shark attack near Jurien Bay
According to the Department of Primary Industry and Regional Development, the woman was attacked by a tiger shark measuring six feet six inches in length. This occurred in shallow waters near Sandlands Island, located north of Jurien Bay.

The woman was partaking in a sea lion interaction experience when the unexpected accident happened. A man who helped the woman out of the water labeled the incident as a "freak accident" while speaking to 9News Perth. Two rescue teams were deployed to the scene soon after.
With the assistance of a local charter boat, the woman was quickly brought back to shore. She was initially taken to Jurien Bay Health Center before being airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital. In critical condition, she underwent emergency surgery on Monday afternoon.
Sandland Island, which is around 328 yards away from the coast and spans across approximately five acres, is a popular site frequented by local tour operators offering sea lion swimming activities.
Authorities have subsequently closed the surrounding beaches as a safety precaution. The Department of Primary Industry and Regional Development is deep into investigating the incident and has urged the public to exercise extreme caution when in the Jurien Bay area.
