The news of Shakira's breakup with footballer Gerard Piqué in June 2022 sent worldwide shockwaves. The alleged reason for the split was infidelity on Piqué's part. Coming from Colombia, Shakira found this a tough blow. The couple had two sons during their 12 years together, living a seemingly joyful life.
Since their separation, both have maintained privacy, declining interviews and avoiding discussions about their personal lives. Nonetheless, the media continues to cover the end of their relationship actively.
Shakira also recently faced allegations of tax evasion. According to the Catalan newspaper "Sport", she allegedly avoided paying 14.5 million euros in taxes. The artist potentially faced eight years, two months in prison, and a 23.8 million euro fine. Ultimately, she was given a three-year suspended sentence and ordered to pay a 7.6 million euro fine.
Following the court hearing, Shakira's attorney, Pau Molins, speculated about how much she reportedly lost due to her relationship with Piqué.
"Had Shakira not lived in Catalonia, she would have been safe from six offenses. In Catalonia, you can face jail time for crimes you wouldn't be charged for in Madrid. If she had fallen in love with Sergio Ramos, not Gerard Piqué, she would have lost significantly less money. She lost a total of 120 million euros," said her lawyer.
Despite the losses, Shakira also managed to profit after their separation. Following the breakup with the ex-Barcelona player, she released singles addressing her former partner. These songs turned into worldwide hits, significantly boosting her earnings.
The songs "Te Felicito", "Monotonia", and "Session 53", in which Shakira sang about Piqué, have been particularly profitable. While she received criticism for capitalizing on their relationship's status for financial gains, the income continued to pour in.
Forbes reports that Shakira made 350,000 dollars from YouTube and over 2.6 million dollars from Spotify from these hits. These income sources contribute to her estimated over 400 million dollars net worth.
