For years, social media and popular culture have projected an image of women with perfect, long, lush hair that effortlessly forms Hollywood waves, radiant complexions, and nails so strong they might serve as lock picks. This ideal is further reinforced by artificial filters that create idealized images many aspire to. To achieve this, individuals fixated on perfection embark on a journey through cosmetics, supplements, cosmetic treatments, or plastic surgeries, all to resemble their on-screen idols.
The internet sparks a boom in a new dietary supplement
On the quest for an ideal look, people are willing to try almost anything. New methods regularly appear online, claiming to change one’s appearance almost instantly. A beauty-obsessed society eagerly tries these, hoping for the promised results. Over time, we’ve tried drinking yeast, nettle and horsetail teas and consuming collagen and chia seeds. We've massaged rosemary water, horse ointment, and mustard oil into our scalps and applied everything from Vaseline to snail slime on our faces. The latest ingredient touted as a cure-all for beauty issues is sea moss.
TikToker Marcyj95 attempted to make homemade sea moss. Unfortunately, something went awry, and she found the jelly inedible, triggering a gag reflex. Undeterred, she bought a store-bought version, but her reaction was quite similar.
On the other hand, Alexandra Żebrowska had more success with sea moss. She created two versions of the supplement: one natural and one with passion fruit flavor. Her jelly had a much smoother consistency, likely due to longer blending. On TikTok, she documents her experience with the moss, which she describes as "delicious."
