Food remnants that fall into the kitchen drain can lead to clogs and emit an unpleasant odour. Fortunately, a simple solution exists to prevent these issues. All it takes is one household product to eliminate the unwanted smell and remnants of contaminants instantly.

Modern drainage systems are equipped with specialized grates designed to catch food remnants and in bathroom drains - hair. This mechanism significantly reduces the number of contaminants entering the pipes. However, it's possible for the grate to shift or for contaminants to be so fine that they effortlessly pass through.

In such instances, an unpleasant odour may begin to emanate from the sink after a few days. The solution to this problem is surprisingly simple and involves a common household ingredient.

How to tell if your drain is clogged?

A clogged drain often comes as a surprise, usually developing slowly and imperceptibly. Pouring leftover fat down the drain or washing dishes without a grate can lead to a clogged drain, noticeable when water fails to drain properly.

Fortunately, there’s no immediate need to call a plumber. Pour a generous amount of baking soda with a dash of vinegar or citric acid down the drain, followed by a quart of hot water.

Combining baking soda and acid or vinegar initiates a strong chemical reaction. The water in the drain will fizz, a phenomenon that should subside after a few minutes. This mixture effectively addresses the clog. However, if the problem persists, it indicates a deeper clog within the pipes, necessitating a plumber’s intervention.

How to get rid of the unpleasant smell from the drain?

Sometimes, a drain may not be clogged but emits an unpleasant odor permeating the kitchen or house. To combat this, try a simple trick.

Grate a bar of soap using a grater with fine holes. Pour the soap flakes down the drain, followed by a small amount of warm tap water. The soap dissolves grease and dirt and eliminates the foul smell. Add a tablespoon of baking soda to the soap for an enhanced cleaning effect. This combination bolsters the soap’s effectiveness and helps remove food remnants. For optimal results, conduct this cleaning routine once a week.
