Safe and legal ways to defend your balcony from nesting pigeons this breeding season
In cities, pigeons have become a constant element of the landscape. They often build their nests on balconies or windowsills, significantly dirtying them with droppings. Pigeon droppings carry dangerous microorganisms that can cause a range of serious human diseases, including Lyme disease and Cryptococcosis, an infection that affects the meninges.

Is it permissible to remove a pigeon's nest?
Pigeon breeding season typically falls between April and August. If during this period you observe two pigeons habitually visiting your balcony and collecting sticks, it's probable they're attempting to build a nest.
If you prefer a clean balcony and tranquillity by the window, proactive measures must be implemented immediately, or the pigeons will lay eggs in the nest. It's vital to note that pigeons are protected animals and must not be harmed in any way, particularly during their breeding season. Any actions that harm pigeons or disrupt their nest can result in legal penalties, including imprisonment.
What to do if pigeons are starting to build a nest on the balcony?
If you spot even a couple of sticks on your balcony, immediately remove them. To prevent the reoccurrence of pigeons, consider installing a special net over the balcony. This can be obtained from gardening stores. The net should adequately cover the balcony, including any spaces between railings. This method is especially beneficial for cat owners, as their pets can safely enjoy the open balcony on warm days.
Netting isn't the only solution. An effective deterrent for pigeons is installing a raven sculpture on the railing, as pigeons fear these birds. If you cannot afford a bird sculpture or netting, homemade methods are also available.
The smell of vinegar repels pigeons. If you can tolerate the strong smell, consider spraying a 1:1 solution of vinegar and water on your balcony railings. However, reapplication is necessary after rain or strong winds.
Another smell pigeons dislike is naphthalene. Hanging naphthalene balls on the balcony is recommended to deter bird visits. The best practice for bird deterrence is combining nets for physical barriers and naphthalene balls for scent deterrents.
