It has been more than three years since the tragic incident on the set of the film "Rust," directed by Joel Souza. Legal proceedings continue as the defense teams for lead actor Alec Baldwin and Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the arms handler on set, seek the lightest sentences for their clients. Gutierrez Reed has just been sentenced.

Recall that the tragedy unfolded in October 2021 during a scene in "Rust" where Baldwin was handling a gun that unexpectedly discharged. The director and screenwriter were lightly injured, but tragically, 42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins did not survive. Despite being airlifted to a hospital, Hutchins' life could not be saved.

In January, Baldwin faced charges of involuntary manslaughter. Shortly after, he released a statement denying any responsibility for the accident that claimed his colleague's life. He contended that the gun fired without his intervention, a claim contradicted by the prosecution's evidence. A recent report accuses Baldwin of blatantly lying to avoid consequences. His trial is set to commence on July 10, and the verdict for Gutierrez Reed, the other accused, has been announced.

Hannah Gutierrez Reed, tasked with managing weapon safety on "Rust," also faced legal scrutiny. The presence of live ammunition in the gun, as opposed to the expected blanks for filming, remains a mystery. In early March, Gutierrez Reed was convicted of involuntary manslaughter but acquitted of perjury, another charge she faced during the trial.

The decision was made on Monday, April 15, 2024. Reed received the maximum sentence of 18 months in prison, a decision underscored by NBC News. Before delivering the sentence, the judge criticized Reed's apparent lack of remorse.

Despite resisting tears while requesting probation and expressing her deep sorrow for Hutchins, her friends, and family, the emotional plea did not influence the court's decision. Statements from Hutchins's mother in Ukraine and a brief comment from Joel Souza were also presented during the hearing, highlighting the profound impact of the tragedy as Souza's latest project prepares for release.
