This information, as reported by the newspaper, originates from representatives of the US administration. The report states that in recent weeks, Russia has acquired ballistic missiles from North Korea in addition to the discussed purchases from Iran.

The United States is observing with significant concern as Russia actively moves forward in negotiations to acquire short-range ballistic missiles from Iran. A US official quoted by the "Wall Street Journal" stated, "We assess that Russia intends to purchase missile systems from Iran."

Since 2022, the White House has issued multiple reports on Russia's potential acquisition of Iranian missiles, which would accompany the already purchased drones used in the conflict with Ukraine. According to the "WSJ", while the transaction is yet to be finalized, it might be completed soon.

New Missiles

If successful, the earliest missile deliveries could be expected in spring. The "WSJ" reports that a Russian delegation visited an Iranian missile test site in December to observe the short-range Ababil missiles. The same report cites American intelligence suggesting that Russia might also be interested in acquiring the Fateh and Zolfaghar missiles, which boast a range between 125 and 435 miles.

Concerns reported by the "WSJ" cite not only a potential augmentation of Russia's arsenal in light of the ongoing conflict with Ukraine, but also the possible strengthening of Iran. Their military cooperation with Moscow could notably bolster Iran's economy and improve its missile systems, military electronics, air defense and spy satellites.

Additionally, the US administration has highlighted that Russia recently received several dozen short-range ballistic missiles from North Korea for the first time. Prior to this, American sources had only reported on the delivery of ammunition and missiles for rocket artillery from Pyongyang. However, South Korean media suggested potential transport of ballistic missiles from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) as early as November, as told by officials from Seoul.
