Flood Situation in the Kurgan Region
The situation in the Kurgan region, northeast of Orenburg, is worsening. A dramatic increase in the water level on the Tobol River has been observed. In Kurgan, the regional capital, efforts to strengthen dams and flood barriers are underway.
Residents are reminded to evacuate through frequent siren warnings.
Denis Davidov, the Director of Road Infrastructure and City Improvements in Kurgan, stated that the efforts aim to "elevate the dam crest should the water surpass the dam levels."
Risk of Evacuating 280,000 People
Efforts are ongoing round the clock along the entire dam. "We have mobilized all available resources and equipment," confirmed authorities. According to Governor Vadim Shumkov of the Kurgan region, the Tobol River's water level is expected to reach 36 feet.
The Governor further warned that as water levels continue to rise, additional evacuations may become necessary:
- At 30 feet, around 17,800 people will need evacuation.
- At 36 feet, approximately 28,000 individuals.
- At 46 feet, a staggering 280,000 people might have to leave their homes.
