Russia's deadly overnight barrage devastates Kyiv and Kharkiv
Russian forces shelled Kyiv and Kharkiv overnight, resulting in the deaths of at least nine people. The daughter of one of the victims shared that her mother had a strong desire to continue living. The 85-year-old lost her life in a Russian drone attack, dying beneath the rubble of a building that was completely destroyed.
Throughout the night of April 23 to 24, Russian forces attacked Kyiv and Kharkiv using rockets, ballistic missiles, and drones. At least nine people perished in the shelling. Ukrainian authorities have reported that 70 individuals were injured, though they caution that the actual figure may be considerably higher.
Ukrainian public television, "Suspilne," interviewed a woman whose mother was killed in the Russian attack. She expressed her shock over the events in Kyiv. She emphasized that her 85-year-old mother, a victim of the Russian drone, "wanted to continue living."
This is my mother. She would have turned 85 this year. Although she was already old, she did not intend to die yet, said the woman, sitting next to the body of her murdered mother during the interview.
The woman stated that she believes the actions of the Russians are "a crime against her country, against all of Ukraine." She noted that the Russian military "must have specifically targeted the house where her mother lived."
It's hard for me to say anything. I hate Russia and its president. We all hate him, said the emotional woman, adding that "too many children and elderly people have died in this war to remain indifferent to it."
Ukrainian television reported that there were 15 people in the building where Olena Luniwna died. Currently, rescuers have confirmed they have found six people. Access to the others is challenging, and the rescue operation is ongoing. It is unclear whether any of the missing are still alive.
