Russian tanks to get 'drone-destroying fans'? Leaked plans reveal novel defense idea
The extensive use of assault drones by Ukrainians on the battlefield has compelled Russia to devise new defense mechanisms against this type of weaponry. They have recently proposed a rather novel idea, with plans notably appearing online. According to the drawings made by Russian engineers, one of the new defense systems for tanks and armored vehicles appears to be devices shaped like fans.

The concept entails mounting a 'fan' on the rear part of the tank turret with an electric motor supplied by the vehicle's on-board electrical system. This motor unwinds steel wires fastened with springs and clamps, potentially creating a sort of 'protective circle' above the tank, designed to detonate enemy drones at a safe distance from the tank's hull.
As of now, it remains unclear whether the Russians actually plan to implement such a device on tanks. No vehicles equipped with this type of gear have been observed on the battlefield. However, it's not surprising that Russia is constantly attempting to modernize its equipment, especially as Ukraine increases the effective use of drones.
This is not the first innovative defense mechanism proposed by the Russians. In the past, 'grills' were mounted on tanks, aimed at protecting the tank from Javelins and NLAWs. This solution not only proved ineffective for missile defense but also posed an additional risk to soldiers. In case of a hit, the grills prevented the crew from escaping the vehicle's interior.
It's worth noting that the Russians are actively exploring other avenues to tilt the balance of victory in their favor. Recently, there have been discussions regarding plans to modernize all Tu-22M3s. While many proposals are being entertained, it remains to be seen which will actually be executed.
