Russian T‑90M tank exposed: Bricks used as armor backfire
The Russian T-90M tank, praised by President Vladimir Putin as one of the best tanks in the world, has undergone numerous upgrades, some of which are quite surprising. A notable example is the use of bricks mounted on the vehicle, which were likely intended to act as reactive armor blocks.

To enhance the protection of their tanks, the Russians are adding various elements—from anti-drone cages to reactive armor blocks. However, as reported by the Bulgarian Military service, these upgrades don't always serve their intended purpose. Photos circulating on social media depict a troubling modification: a destroyed T-90M tank in which the supposed reactive armor blocks turned out to be ordinary bricks.
T-90M weakened by "upgrades"
The tank, which was meant to be a fortress on the battlefield, was sabotaged long before it reached the front line. Its armor, made from bricks, doomed it to destruction, as the Bulgarian Military publication noted. Images of the wrecked T-90M reveal more concerning details, highlighting deficiencies in the tank's protective mechanisms. This includes, among other flaws, removing key elements of the modular reactive armor Relikt from the turret and front part of the hull.
It is unclear whether the absence of these elements is due to budget cuts or arises from other circumstances. These gaps in the tank's protection significantly hinder its ability to conduct effective combat and survive on the modern battlefield, where threats include anti-tank missiles, mines, and widely used drones.
The T-90M "Proryv" is considered one of the most advanced achievements of the Russian military. Since 2020, this tank has been equipped with a 2A46M-5 125 mm cannon and an advanced fire control system called "Kalina." The design also incorporates modular reactive armor "Relikt," which provides enhanced protection for the hull and turret. Powered by a 1000-horsepower engine, the T-90M can reach speeds of about 40 mph, offering significant mobility on the battlefield.
Despite its advanced technology, the T-90M has faced criticism, primarily from the Ukrainian armed forces, which frequently analyze captured units. It has been observed that the microelectronics in the tank are susceptible to damage, and the technical solutions employed are based on older models like the T-72. Additionally, difficulties in radio communication present further challenges for the crew. Even though Vladimir Putin has lauded the tank as "the best in the world," the T-90M has been known to lose battles, including those against Ukrainian drones.
