Russian Sukhoi unveils groundbreaking S‑76 unmanned hybrid aircraft
Russian Sukhoi has introduced the innovative unmanned S-76, which combines the features of an airplane and a helicopter. Thanks to its hybrid propulsion and vertical takeoff capabilities, this machine has the potential to revolutionize air transport.
The Russian company Sukhoi has been working on the new project, designated as S-76, since 2022. According to Defense-Ua, " previously known as "Atlas," this "vertically taking off unmanned transport platform" was first presented in August 2024. The S-76 stands out for its ability to combine the functions of an airplane and a multi-rotor helicopter. Equipped with both electric engines and a combustion engine powered by AI-95 aviation fuel and kerosene, this machine promises to be a revolutionary solution in air transport.
A commercial technical marvel with potential military applications
Designed primarily for cargo transport, the S-76 is expected to be up to one-third cheaper than its manned counterparts, making it an attractive option for the commercial industry. Nevertheless, its capability for autonomous operation and lack of need for specialized areas for takeoff and landing may also draw attention from the military sector. According to Defence-Ua, tests have shown that the machine can successfully take off and land vertically, confirming previous reports of its advanced functionalities.
Key technical specifications
The S-76 boasts a maximum takeoff weight of 3,300 lbs and can carry loads up to 660 lbs. Its fuselage length is 24 feet, and the wingspan reaches 36 feet. This machine can achieve speeds up to 112 mph, and its maximum flight ceiling is 13,000 feet. However, the most impressive feature is its range, 621 miles when refueled. As a modern solution in transport, the S-76 sets new standards in this dynamically developing sector.
