Russian submarines trapped in Black Sea as Turkey blocks escape

Four Russian Kilo-class submarines recently caused significant concern in the Black Sea. After the Ukrainians sank one of them—the "Rostov-on-Don," it became evident that the remaining units would soon cease to be a threat. They cannot leave the Black Sea due to Turkey's blockade of the Bosporus.

On Friday, during a missile attack on Crimea, the Ukrainians sank the Russian submarine "Rostov-on-Don." It was one of four such units in the Black Sea capable of attacking Ukraine with Kalibr missiles.

According to the Ukrainian service Defence Express, the successful attack on "Rostov-on-Don," undergoing repairs at the facility in Kilen Bay, Sevastopol, indicates that all Russian submarines in the Black Sea are trapped.

The remaining three Russian submarines in the Black Sea cannot perform necessary repairs in Sevastopol due to the threat of Ukrainian attacks. Additionally, there are no other repair bases on the Russian coast of the Black Sea or the Sea of Azov.

These submarines also could not leave the Black Sea because Turkey had blocked the Bosporus Strait.

"The longer the remaining submarines in the Black Sea—B-265 'Krasnodar,' B-268 'Veliky Novgorod,' and B-271 'Kolpino'—remain without the necessary inspections and repairs, the greater the likelihood that they will not be able to go to sea or will suffer an accident underwater," states the publication from Defence Express.
