Russian rockets devastate Sumy: 3 dead, dozens injured
On Tuesday morning, Russian forces struck the central part of the city of Sumy. Three people were killed, and over 25 were injured. The condition of several victims is critical. According to BBC Ukraine, this was the first time Russia attacked the city center with a multiple rocket launcher system.
The explosion in the city occurred around 9:00 AM. According to the Sumy Regional Military Administration, the rockets damaged a medical facility, cars, and residential buildings.
One of the missiles hit the roadway of the city's main street. Two cars were completely burned, reported "Kordon.Media".
The condition of some of the injured is serious and critical.
Zelensky on the attack on Sumy
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reacted to the attack.
"The Russians brutally hit Sumy. Just the city, ordinary streets – with rocket artillery. This is a completely deliberate attack on civilians," he wrote in a message on Telegram.
He added that one of the missiles that did not explode penetrated a wall in an apartment on the ninth floor.
"These aren't people, they're beasts," said a cafe owner about the Russians in an interview with "Kordon.Media".
Taxi driver Yuriy, whose car was at a red light at the moment of impact, told reporters about the consequences of the Russian attack. "I looked up – two cars in front of me were burning," he said.
Glass shards fell on the man, but he miraculously escaped with his life. The passenger Yuriy was driving jumped out of the car and also wasn't injured.
The city of Sumy had not been shelled with artillery since the start of the full-scale invasion. According to BBC Ukraine, this was the first time Russia attacked the city center using cluster munitions from a rocket artillery system.
