The remarks made by Pope Francis during an interview with Swiss radio and television prompted a flurry of reactions. Among various comments, he stated, "The stronger party is the one that understands the situation, considers the nation, and is brave enough to negotiate under a white flag."

"In today's world, one can negotiate with the support of international forces. The term 'negotiate' itself is a sign of bravery," added the Bishop of Rome.

Zakharova's reaction to the Pope's statement

Maria Zakharova, representing the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, did not overlook the Pope's controversial remarks. Once again, she criticized the West.

"I interpret it as the Pope asking the West to relinquish its ambitions and concede its errors," Zakharova commented, as reported by the news agency ANSA.

A vocal supporter of Vladimir Putin, Zakharova also suggested that the West is exploiting Ukraine in an attempt to weaken Russia. "Russia has never hindered negotiations, yet the situation in Ukraine has reached an impasse," she noted.
