The Marder 1, a product of German design from the Rheinstahl conglomerate, has proven to be a valuable asset. By the end of 2023, Ukraine had received 60 of these infantry fighting vehicles, with Germany committing an additional 40 units to the effort. Though several have been destroyed, the recent capture by Russian forces represents a significant achievement, offering an opportunity for a thorough analysis of its design.
### The Marder 1 in Russian Hands
Defense analyst Jarosław Wolski highlights the Marder 1's more than 40 years of service, noting its exceptional safety features for the crew compared to similar Russian models. This capture represents the third type of Western vehicle to fall into Russian hands, following the Swedish CV90 and an American M2A2 ODS Bradley.
The Marder 1's design dates back to between 1970–1975. Upon its introduction, it was celebrated as a pioneering NATO infantry fighting vehicle, boasting impressive armor and mobility. Its formidable armament continues to be effective to this day.
Germany has supplied Ukraine with the 1A3 version of the Marder 1, which includes a Rheinmetall 20 mm caliber cannon capable of hitting targets up to 1.55 miles away, a Milan anti-tank guided missile launcher, and two 7.62 mm caliber machine guns. Enhancements also feature an upgraded gunner's station equipped with thermal imaging.
These vehicles enable Ukrainian forces to target Russian infantry and armored vehicles, sometimes even tanks, which is crucial given the age and vulnerability of much of the Russian armored fleet.
The Marder 1 can carry up to 10 individuals, with three seats dedicated to the crew. The 1A3 version, in particular, benefits from additional armor, offering improved protection against a variety of threats, including enhanced defense against bomblets from cluster munitions.
Powered by a nearly 800 horsepower engine, the Marder 1 can reach speeds up to approximately 47 mph. Its tracked propulsion system is designed for excellent maneuverability over challenging terrains and obstacles.
