Russian embassy urges citizens to consider leaving Syria

The Russian Embassy in Damascus released a statement addressed to Russians living in Syria, reminding them of the "possibility of leaving the country on commercial flights." This statement was deemed necessary due to the "complex military-political situation in Syria."

In Syria, anti-government militias operating in the north have launched an unexpected offensive, capturing cities like Aleppo and Hama. So far, the army loyal to Bashar al-Assad has not mounted significant resistance.

The Russian Embassy in Damascus issued an urgent statement on Telegram. It reminds Russian citizens in Syria of the "possibility of leaving the country on commercial flights through existing airports."

The embassy justified the need for such a reminder because of the "complex military-political situation in Syria." It was emphasized that the embassy and the consular department are operating normally. Russian citizens have not yet been called to evacuate the country.

Meanwhile, Jordan has closed its border crossing with Syria. In recent days, skirmishes occurred there as rebels attacked Syrian military posts.

Islamist militia offensive

The rebellion's offensive has been underway since November 29. The effort is primarily led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, originating from the Syrian branch of Al-Qaeda, along with pro-Turkish militias from the Syrian National Army. The Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces are also participating in the offensive.

In just a few days, the rebels seized the cities of Aleppo and Hama, and Damascus announced a withdrawal from the city of Homs. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that the rebellion's objective is Damascus.

The attacks occurred at a very bad time for the Assad regime. Its closest allies, Russia and Iran, are involved in other military conflicts. Moscow is focused on Ukraine, while Tehran supports Palestine and Hezbollah in their confrontation with Israel.
