"NORAD detected, tracked, and intercepted two Russian TU-95 and two PRC H-6 military aircraft operating in the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) on July 24, 2024. NORAD fighter jets from the United States and Canada conducted the intercept," stated the press release from the Canadian-American unit.
It was added that the Russian and Chinese aircraft "remained in international airspace and did not enter American or Canadian sovereign airspace." It was also emphasized that "This Russian and PRC activity in the Alaska ADIZ is not seen as a threat." At the same time, NORAD forces will continue to monitor the activity of these countries' aircraft near North America and "respond to their presence."
The Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) begins where sovereign airspace ends and is a defined portion of international airspace that requires ready identification of all aircraft in the interest of national security, NORAD reminds.
NORAD is a binational command of the United States and Canada. The unit utilizes a layered defense network consisting of satellites, ground-based and airborne radars, and fighter jets to detect and track aircraft and inform appropriate actions.
