Aleksandr Surikov, aged 68, passed away on Saturday night under circumstances that are yet to be clarified, reported the Mozambican newspaper "O Pais."
The sudden death of the Russian ambassador
The Maputo police department disclosed that they were notified of the ambassador's death belatedly, by which time "his body had already been transported to the main hospital" of the capital. Upon hearing the news of what appeared to be a "sudden death," officers proceeded to the medical facility, only to find that "the body had already been placed in the hospital morgue," they mentioned.
Possible stroke?
Upon their arrival at the hospital, the officers were advised by the Russian consul, Yuri Doroshenkov, against initiating an autopsy.
"The officers limited their actions to taking photographs of the deceased's body at the morgue (...), as well as images at his residence," was highlighted in the report.
According to statements from Russian officials, the abrupt death of the ambassador might have been caused by a stroke.
