Russian airlines expand routes amid global uncertainties

The Russian Federal Air Transport Agency has granted permission for Russian airlines to fly to Middle Eastern countries such as Iran and Israel. Meanwhile, other international airlines are withdrawing these connections due to security concerns.

The agency allows carriers to fly to and over Iran, Israel, Iraq, and Lebanon, but operations must be conducted only during the day—between 2 AM and 12 PM Eastern Time. These restrictions are in place until November 3. Russian airlines Aeroflot and Red Wings are already operating flights to Tel Aviv and Tehran.

Previously, on October 1, Russia implemented a temporary ban on flights over these countries but rescinded it a few days later. Despite these changes, other carriers, including those from the Persian Gulf and the EU, have avoided these regions due to conflict risks. Qatar Airways, for example, has suspended flights to Lebanon and Iran, citing the "current situation" in the region.

Rosaviatsiya has shown openness to flights to Pakistan and accepts the operations of Pakistani airline PIA, which was added to the EU "blacklist" in August 2020.

This blacklisting means a ban on using European airspace and operating at airports in the 27 EU countries. The decision was introduced in 2020, with regular renewals keeping it in force.

Russia seeks allies

Russia is actively seeking international partners and allies. To this end, it is preparing to launch direct connections between Moscow and cities in Pakistan, such as Islamabad and Karachi. Initially, these routes will be operated by PIA and Aeroflot.

The Ambassador of Pakistan to Russia, Muhammad Khalid Jamali, expressed hope that such connections will attract many Russian tourists to Pakistan. He also explained to the Russian agency TASS that the project is in progress, although it is not expected to be completed before the end of 2024. He emphasizes that direct contact between people is irreplaceable and plays a crucial role in the process of strengthening ties.
